  • Emergency Steps

In the event of a hot water system emergency in Sydney, follow these steps to ensure your situation is managed effectively before our trusted plumbers arrive:

    • Locate Your Hot Water Heater: Knowing the exact location of your hot water heater is essential. It may be upstairs, downstairs, inside, or outside your property.
    • Identify the Hot Water Energy Source: Determine whether your system runs on electricity, gas, solar, or a heat pump. This will guide your next actions.
    • Check for Leaks: If your hot water system is leaking, locate the control valve. For electric storage tanks, this is usually at the base of the tank. For continuous flow systems, it's typically located beneath the heater. If water continues to flow, locate and turn off the water meter.
    • Turn Off the Power Supply: If possible, switch off your power supply to avoid electrical hazards. For electric hot water heaters, you may also need to turn off the circuit breaker to prevent the heating element from turning on unexpectedly.
    • Turn Off the Gas Supply: If you have a gas hot water system, turn off the gas supply until our professional plumber arrives to assess and fix the problem.

Hot Water System Maintenance Near You

Do hot water systems need to be maintained? The answer is a definite YES!

Hot water systems, although often hidden from view, are essential components of any household. They work tirelessly to provide hot water for showers, taps, washing machines, and dishwashers. Despite their crucial role, these systems are often neglected due to their location. Given their constant use, it’s important to ensure regular maintenance of your hot water system to maintain efficiency and prolong its lifespan.

  • What's Involved

When servicing a hot water system with a storage tank, our team will typically assess six main areas:

    1. Checking for any visible signs of water heater leakage
    2. Replacing the sacrificial anodes in the hot water tank if required
    3. Inspecting the pressure and temperature of the water tank
    4. Checking both the static and working flow of the water pressure
    5. Examining the electrical element at the base of the system
    6. Performing an overall assessment of the system's condition

For continuous flow hot water systems, maintenance differs slightly. During a service, our plumber will typically perform the following checks to ensure the system operates efficiently:

    1. Checking the fan function
    2. Inspecting the heat exchange
    3. Testing the gas pressure
    4. Assessing the performance of the isolation valve
  • How Often Should You Get Your Hot Water System Serviced?

Regardless of whether your system is solar, gas, electric, or heat pump, it is highly recommended to schedule a professional service every 1 to 2 years. Regular maintenance can help extend the life of your system, enhance its efficiency, and save you money over time.

    Types of Hot Water Systems

Whether your system is solar, gas, electric, heat pump, or another type, it is crucial to have your water heater serviced regularly by a qualified plumber to ensure optimal performance.

    Factors Affecting Service Frequency

The frequency of service can be influenced by factors such as usage, location, and wear and tear. Over time, key components like the pressure relief valve, TPR valve, sacrificial anodes, and other plumbing parts may require replacement. Repair costs can vary depending on the brand, so it’s wise to keep your water heater manual handy, as some parts might be covered under warranty.

When to Service Your Hot Water System

If you’re unsure of when your last service was or if you’ve never had one, our expert team is here to help. A simple assessment and servicing typically take about an hour, but more extensive repairs might require additional time.

Expert Plumbing Services at Network Plumbing

At Network Plumbing, our experienced plumbers are dedicated to ensuring your hot water system operates at peak efficiency. Our team is skilled in servicing, repairing, and installing all types of water heaters, including electric, gas, solar, and instantaneous hot water systems. No matter the type of water heater, we can handle it all.

Types of Parts Needing Water Heater Repair

TPR Valve

The primary role of the Temperature & Pressure Relief Valve (TPR) is to release any excess pressure that builds up in the hot water tank. If your TPR valve is constantly running, this may indicate that it needs to be replaced. This issue should be addressed promptly to ensure the safety and efficiency of your hot water system.

Sacrificial Anode

Internally located in hot water systems is the sacrificial anode, typically made from magnesium. This anode is installed by the manufacturer to prevent the tank from rusting by attracting the minerals present in our water supply to the anode instead of the tank. However, after approximately 5 years, the anode's effectiveness diminishes, and your hot water system may start to rust more rapidly. In areas with 'hard water,' it might need to be replaced even sooner. To extend the lifespan of your hot water system, replacing the sacrificial anode during your scheduled regular service could be an easy and cost-effective solution.

Thermostatic Mixing Valve

A thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) provides better control over the safety of your hot water system in both homes and workplaces. This valve ensures that the water temperature does not exceed Australian safety standards by mixing cold water with the hot water, preventing it from getting too hot. For example, you may want to set the maximum temperature for the bathroom to 45°C while keeping the kitchen sink water at a higher 50°C. TMVs are often used in commercial properties and strata complexes to ensure compliance with safety standards.

Pilot Light and Gas Pressure

These components are essential for the operation of gas hot water systems. If the gas pressure is too low, the system will not heat water effectively. Additionally, if the pilot light fails to ignite, the hot water system will not produce hot water. A trained and licensed plumbing professional can clean or repair the system, as well as test your gas pressure to ensure your hot water system is working at its optimal level.

If your hot water unit is approaching the end of its lifespan or your household energy bills have risen, it might be time for a hot water heater replacement. Take a look at the information below and reach out to one of our specialists to identify the most suitable new hot water system for your needs. We’re known for providing top recommendations that can save you money. Replacing your hot water system should involve careful consideration of all relevant factors.

Start by deciding how you would like to heat your water, then explore the different system types available. If you're experiencing issues like water heater leakage and are looking for replacement options, trust our experts to help you find the best solution for your home.

How Long Will A Hot Water Heater Last?

Each method of heating results in different expected lifespans for your hot water system. A reliable indicator of this lifespan is typically the manufacturer's warranty, which provides a general guide for your water unit. We have compiled an average to help give you an idea of what to expect.

To prolong the life of your system and prevent issues like water heater leakage, it is essential to follow the manufacturer's guidelines. Regular servicing of any hot water system will ensure it runs efficiently, helping to avoid unexpected problems. This proactive maintenance can reduce the likelihood of needing an early replacement, water heater repairs, or unnecessary fixes. For dependable water heater repairs, trust our experts to maintain your system in peak condition and minimise the need for frequent replacements.

8-12yrs

Storage Tank System

The average lifespan of a storage tank is approx. 8-12 years. (depending on servicing and the quality of the water used).

10-12yrs

Continuous Flow System

A gas hot water system that's a continuously flowing unit could last up to 10-12 years, approx.

10+yrs

Heat Pump Hot Water System

Your heat pump hot water system may last approx. 10 years plus.

15-20yrs

Solar Hot Water Systems

A solar system could last anywhere from 15 to 20 years plus, approx. (with regular 5-year service)

Lifespan & Maintenance of Solar Hot Water Systems

Different heating methods come with varying lifespans, which can often be estimated by reviewing the manufacturer's warranty for your solar hot water system. On average, solar hot water systems have a lifespan of around 15 years, although this can vary depending on how well the system is maintained and serviced regularly.

To help extend the life of your system, it’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Regular servicing of your solar hot water system will help maintain its efficiency, prevent unexpected issues, and reduce the need for early replacement or costly repairs. We recommend scheduling a service for your solar hot water system roughly every 5 years to ensure it continues to operate at its best.

  • What are the Benefits of Solar Hot Water Systems?

With Australia being the driest continent on Earth, we enjoy an average of 8 hours of sunshine on the east coast and up to 10 hours on the west coast. That's a significant amount of sunlight. With water conservation becoming increasingly important, it might be time to replace your old, inefficient hot water system with a more sustainable solar hot water system.

How Does a Solar Hot Water System Work?

Solar hot water systems use solar collectors to capture energy from sunlight and transfer that energy to heat the water in your system. There are two main types of solar collectors:

    Flat Panels:

    • Save space with the tank, which is usually mounted on the roof.
    • Generally cheaper to install.

    Evacuated Tubing:

    • Offers a larger exposed surface area, allowing for greater heat capture.
    • More efficient at transferring heat, especially in Australian conditions.
    • Easier to maintain, with separate replaceable components.
    • Performs well in overcast conditions.
    • Requires less roof space.
    • Is more resistant to corrosion.

What Happens on a Cloudy Day?

Even on cloudy days, solar systems can still capture heat, though not as efficiently as on sunny days. If the water isn't warm enough, a booster (either electric or gas) will activate when the water temperature drops below a certain level. The booster will turn off automatically once the water reaches the desired temperature. Gas boosters tend to be more environmentally friendly than electric boosters.

Advantages of Solar Hot Water Systems

Although the initial purchase and installation costs of solar systems are higher compared to gas or electric hot water systems, these costs are recovered over the system's lifespan. The savings are most noticeable in the following conditions:

    • Larger households
    • Warmer climates
    • Areas with abundant sunlight

    Overall Benefits:

    • Long-term savings
    • A renewable energy resource
    • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions

Hot Water Repair FAQs

  • WHAT ARE THE HOT WATER UNIT INSTALLATION REGULATIONS?

Installations are now required by law to include a tempering valve when a new hot water unit is installed. This regulation applies not only to new installations but also to any alterations made to your pipes. Whether you are renovating or making any changes, a tempering valve must be installed with any alterations. Tempering valves are crucial for reducing the risk of burns, and while it may take some adjustment, safety is essential in protecting your family from harm. Additionally, you may want to consider installing a water pressure limiting valve at your meter assembly.

When it comes to installing a hot water heater, DIY is not an option. Regulations mandate that only a licensed plumber can perform the installation. We are fully licensed and ready to install any hot water system you choose. Our business is built on efficient service, with your hot water needs always at the forefront. Don't get caught in the cold with no hot water—call us today!

  • WHICH IS THE MOST ENERGY EFFICIENT HOT WATER HEATER?

If you're looking for energy efficiency, the most effective hot water system is the one that best suits your specific needs without incurring high costs in the long term. This is why, when it comes time for system replacement or installing a new storage tank, our plumbing experts take the time to thoroughly understand your requirements and help you make the best choice.

Generally speaking, if you're able to connect to a gas water heater, gas can be an incredibly cost-effective energy source. With gas systems, there's no wasted energy in storing hot water, and you won’t have to worry about unexpected costs due to fluctuating energy rates.

In Sydney, the installation of solar hot water systems and solar panels has gained popularity, offering another excellent option if you have the space on your roof. If you already have solar panels installed, you can also run your electric hot water system using the power from your solar panels, or even use off-peak electricity to power an instantaneous water heater, helping to save money and reduce your household energy consumption.

  • HOW DOES A WATER HEATER WORK?

A water heater essentially works on the foundation of simply heating your water. The method by which it is done can vary.

An Electric hot water system will usually be accompanied by a storage container. The water is heated and stored in the tank, ready to use.

Gas hot water systems can have a storage tank, but an instantaneous heating connection is more commonly associated with gas to heat the water without needing to store the water.

Solar hot water systems run similarly to electricity; however, the energy source that heats hot water comes from the sun into the solar panels, not electricity.

Heat Pump hot water systems work by compressing and separating the cold air from the warm air to heat the hot water. Heat pump water heaters are becoming more popular as they save you on energy costs.

  • HERE'S HOW SOLAR HOT WATER SYSTEMS WORK?

Solar water heaters, also known as solar domestic hot water systems, offer a cost-effective means of generating hot water for homes in any climate. They utilize free sunshine as their fuel. These systems consist of storage tanks and solar collectors, with two types available: active (with circulating pumps and controls) and passive (without).

Solar water heaters, also referred to as solar domestic hot water systems, provide a cost-effective solution for generating hot water in homes, regardless of climate. They harness free sunlight as their energy source. These systems consist of storage tanks and solar collectors, and are available in two types: active systems (which include circulating pumps and controls) and passive systems (which operate without pumps or controls).

  • WHEN DO YOU NEED TO REPLACE A HOT WATER HEATER?

Replacing your hot water heater may become necessary when you notice signs of decline, or if it proves to be more cost-effective than repairing your current system. While minor repairs are possible if issues are detected early, neglecting regular maintenance or delaying a service can lead to more significant problems. In such cases, a replacement may be the most efficient solution, rather than attempting repairs that might not resolve the underlying issue.

Signs such as rust on or around the tank, water leaks, or a complete lack of hot water should be addressed immediately. Additionally, discoloured or dirty water is a strong indication that your system may be on the brink of failure. If any of these symptoms are present, it’s essential to act quickly to avoid further damage and ensure the safety and reliability of your water heating system.

  • HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO REPLACE A HOT WATER HEATER?

Prompt service is just part of how we run our plumbing business. We're pretty confident in offering the same day service for new installations. Our plumbers are well versed in replacement and installation. If unforeseen or significant changes need to be made when it comes to installing a new hot water system, all of this will be discussed on site. Our friendly service ensures your needs are our highest priority.

  • WHAT SIZE HOT WATER SERVICE DO I NEED?

Great question! Unfortunately, there are several factors that will influence your decision when choosing the best hot water unit for your needs. Some important considerations include the number of sinks or taps in your home, as well as how many people will be using the unit on a daily basis. Our hot water specialists can walk you through the benefits and drawbacks of different options, helping to make the decision between various types of hot water and storage units easier for you.

  • WHY DOES MY WATER TEMPERATURE KEEP CHANGING?

This may be an indication that it's time for a service or in need of some repairs. Call our team to discuss an inspection. Hot water system repairs should be actioned. This will minimise the extent of the hot water repairs. Rarely does a hot water system repair fix itself. Professional intervention is key. 2. The pilot light is not working, or it goes out frequently.
    3. You regularly run out of hot water.
    4. Your water pressure is low or fluctuates unexpectedly.

  • WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HEATING METHODS FOR HOT WATER SYSTEMS?

Hot water systems are available with four different energy sources:

    1. Electric Instantaneous Water Heaters or Storage Tanks
    2. Solar Hot Water Systems
    3. Heat Pump Water Heaters

    1. Gas Storage Systems or Instantaneous Gas Heaters
  • WHAT KIND OF HOT WATER SYSTEMS ARE THERE?

Hot water systems are divided into two main categories: Storage Tank Systems and Continuous (also known as Instantaneous) Systems.

    • Storage Systems: Water is heated and stored in an insulated tank, ready for use. Most gas, electric, solar, and heat pump hot water systems utilise a tank. Heat pumps work by using a refrigeration cycle to extract heat from the surrounding air, making them much more energy-efficient. Heat pumps typically save 60-70% of household energy usage compared to other types of heaters, and even more if you have solar panels installed.
    • Continuous (Instantaneous) Systems: Instant hot water heaters only heat the water as needed, and since they don’t have a storage tank, they do not experience the energy losses typically associated with storage systems. These systems operate on natural gas, LPG, or electricity. While most models use gas, electric instantaneous water heaters are also available, and some systems even combine both gas and electricity for added flexibility.
  • DO YOU PROVIDE OTHER PLUMBING SERVICES?

  • HOW CAN I REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS?

In Australian households, there has been a growing trend towards adopting more environmentally friendly methods to heat water and reduce fossil fuel emissions. One of the most effective ways to do this is by installing solar panels for renewable energy. With low running costs and the ability to run off-grid during the day, you can significantly reduce your electricity consumption and lower your energy bills.

Another option is to install solar water heaters, which come with their own set of panels to capture solar energy and heat water. These systems are an excellent choice for reducing reliance on traditional energy sources while benefiting from the sun's natural power.
