Thermal Imaging & Water Leaks From Your Hot Water System

Thermal imaging can help to pinpoint where the hot water is travelling throughout your home. Hot water leaks leave warm patches that may not be visible to the naked eye but can be seen with thermal technology. Inspecting walls, floors and ceilings in a non-destructive manner, saving you money, just the way we like it.

Electrical Current & Pressure Testing

Our plumber will use an electrical current device to map out your drainage or pipelines. The water will then be drained from the pipes. High-pressure nitrogen will be pumped into your pipes. Nitrogen, being one of the lightest gases will find any cracks, breaks or holes and escape to the surface. There will usually be a noise associated with the escaping nitrogen. How Much Water Are You Wasting?

CHECKING FOR LEAKS USING YOUR WATER METER 

If you have your own meter, this simple test will only take a few minutes. For this test to work, it is important not to intentionally use any water at your property. 

• Turn off all taps and water-using appliances. 
  
• Locate your water meter. 
  
• Write down the black and red numbers on the dial of the water meter. 
  
• Wait for at least fifteen minutes. 
  
• Check if the last numbers on the dial have changed.

If the numbers have changed, unfortunately, you have a leak. The greater the change, the bigger the leak from your water pipe.

CHECKING LEAKS WITHOUT A WATER METER

If your property doesn't have an individual meter, checking for leaking pipes can be a little more complicated. Almost all properties have water meters, but you may share a meter with your neighbours. This makes it hard to tell if any leaks are in your pipes or your neighbour's pipes.

SIMPLE WAYS TO LOOK FOR LEAKS

If you know what to look for, you can check for some common sources of leaks around your home.

•  Check your hot water system's expansion valves when you haven't used any hot water for a while. The valve shouldn't be constantly leaking water.
• Check your taps and toilets regularly for signs or sounds of leaks.
• Disconnect hoses or irrigation pipes that are always connected to the garden tap. Then check the taps aren't leaking.
• Place a small piece of dry toilet paper at the back of the toilet bowl and check that it stays dry until the next flush. Toilet cisterns shouldn't release any water between flushes.
• Look for green patches of grass that are different from the grass around it. This can mean you have an underground pipe leak.
