Relining – Frequently Asked Questions

Shay • October 24, 2014

Here are some FAQs on pipe relining:

What size hole needs to be dug in order to allow relining to take place?

Depending on how much the existing pipe is configured, and what style of repair is being installed, in most cases excavation is avoided totally. If required however, only one small excavation will be needed.

Will there be a reduction in the pipe diameter?

Yes. The overall diameter of the pipe is decreased by 6mm. This is not enough to affect the required capacity of the pipe. In fact, the inner surface of the pipe becomes smoother increasing the flow rate and self-cleansing properties.

What is the maximum diameter and length of pipe?

We can treat lines from 50mm up to 250mm in diameter and with a maximum length of up to 50 metres or more.

Are sewer lines the only type of pipe you line?

No! You can line any pipe whether it be horizontal or vertical, round or rectangular, sanitary sewer, stormwater and any other waste situation.

Are you able to reline bends?

Yes! You are able to reline multiple bends with a single liner.

Are you able to reline junctions?

Yes! You are able to install a complete one-piece junction liner.

What types of pipe can be relined?

All types of pipe are suitable to be relined.

What happens if roots have penetrated the pipe?

The pipe is cleaned with a high-pressure water jet. Generally this removes the roots and we can assess the problem. The cleaned pipe can then be relined to eliminate the point where the roots gained access.

What size pipe can be relined?

Pipes from 40mm to 225mm in diameter can be relined.

Is relining expensive?

Compared to digging up the pipe, replacing the pipe and rehabilitating the surrounding area relining is both economical and environmentally friendly.

Is relining guaranteed?

Yes. We provide a 15-year guarantee on every job we reline. This is usually twice that on offer by most plumbers to dig up and replace.

Will roots re-enter my pipe once relined?

No relining is a 100% joint less meaning there is nowhere for the tree roots to enter.

Can relining be used in vertical applications?

Yes. Up to 100metres in length of any material, including copper, asbestos, cast iron or PVC.

Are you able to reline a broken junction piece?

Yes. We can install a complete one-piece junction seal in either 100 or 150mm junctions, any configuration in both 45 and 90 degree applications.

How long has this relining process been in use for?

This process has been in use for in excess of 25 years throughout Europe.

Why don’t many plumbers recommend this sort of repair?

A lot of trades people don’t like changes and are therefore reluctant to offer something they know very little about. Some plumbers also see relining as a threat, because once reline there is often never a need to clean the lines again.

How will I know if relining suits my application and will fix my problem?

Only a camera inspection can determine the best method of repair for each application. Relining cannot be used in every application, and there may still be the need to use relining in conjunction with traditional repair methods.
